{"id":1225,"date":"2019-02-26T18:31:43","date_gmt":"2019-02-26T18:31:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/seleniumfacts.com\/?p=1225"},"modified":"2019-03-04T10:47:22","modified_gmt":"2019-03-04T10:47:22","slug":"selenium-supplementation-insulin-resistance-clinical-study","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seleniumfacts.com\/index.php\/selenium-supplementation-insulin-resistance-clinical-study","title":{"rendered":"Selenium supplementation and insulin resistance: a clinical study"},"content":{"rendered":"<figure id=\"attachment_1227\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1227\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1227 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/seleniumfacts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Insulin-resistance-300x200.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seleniumfacts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Insulin-resistance-300x200.png 300w, https:\/\/seleniumfacts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Insulin-resistance.png 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1227\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>The latest clinical evidence shows that selenium supplementation of older adults with 200 micrograms of a high-selenium yeast preparation for up to three years does not adversely affect pancreatic beta-cell function or insulin sensitivity. <\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>Results from a clinical trial comparing 200 micrograms of selenium supplementation with placebo supplementation show no effect of the selenium supplementation on measures of insulin secretion and insulin action [Jacobs].\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>These results can be regarded as important evidence that selenium supplementation for up to three years in older individuals has <a href=\"https:\/\/drc.bmj.com\/content\/7\/1\/e000613\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">no diabetes causing effects in humans<\/a> [Jacobs].<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The researchers who conducted the selenium and insulin resistance study concluded that the results of the study do not show a causal role for selenium in the development of insulin resistance or in the development of type-2 diabetes [Jacobs].<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Research design of the selenium and insulin resistance study<\/h3>\n<p>Background: In 2016, researchers at the Arizona Cancer Center in Tucson reported on the results of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/27530657\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Selenium Trial<\/a> [Thompson].<\/p>\n<p>In that study, researchers enrolled men and women aged 40 to 80 years from endoscopy clinics in Arizona, Colorado, New York, and Texas. They tested the effect of a high-selenium yeast supplement on the prevention of colorectal adenomas and on the risk of associated Type 2 diabetes [Thompson].<\/p>\n<p>For the present study, a study of possible effects of selenium supplementation on the risk of developing diabetes, the researchers selected 400 participants from the bigger Selenium Trial.\u00a0 The <strong><em>400 participants<\/em><\/strong> were randomly assigned to a selenium supplementation group (n = 205) or to a placebo group (n = 195).<\/p>\n<p>There were approximately 1\/3 women and 2\/3 men among the 400 participants.<\/p>\n<p>The average age of the participants was <strong><em>63 years<\/em><\/strong> plus\/minus 8.9 years<strong>.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h3>Outcome assessments in the selenium and insulin resistance study<\/h3>\n<p>The researchers assessed two primary endpoints:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>beta<\/em>-cell function<\/strong> using the HOMA2-%\u03b2 model<\/li>\n<li><strong>insulin sensitivity<\/strong> using the HOMA2-%S model<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The HOMA2 assessments showed the following outcomes:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>No statistically significant differences between the selenium group and the placebo group on either measure (<strong><em>beta<\/em>-cell function or insulin sensitivity<\/strong>) after 2.9 years of supplementation [Jacobs]<\/li>\n<li>No statistically significant differences between the selenium group and the placebo group when <strong>stratified by<\/strong> <strong>age or gender<\/strong> [Jacobs]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Secondary assessment in the selenium and insulin resistance study<\/h3>\n<p>To test further the possibility of a link between selenium supplementation and the risk of type-2 diabetes, the researchers drew a convenience sample of 175 participants \u2013 96 participants in the placebo group and 79 participants in the selenium supplementation group.<\/p>\n<p>They administered the modified oral glucose tolerance test (mOGTT test) to these participants.<\/p>\n<p>The oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) measures the body&#8217;s response to sugar.<\/p>\n<p>Accordingly, the OGTT test can be used to screen for type 2 diabetes. The modified version of the OGTT is often used to diagnose gestational diabetes.<\/p>\n<h3>Results of the oral glucose tolerance test<\/h3>\n<p>Both the selenium group and the placebo group had <strong>fasting glucose concentrations<\/strong>, on average, that were within the normal range (= less than 100 mg\/dL).<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Selenium group: 92.3 mg\/dL (plus\/minus 12 mg\/dL)<\/li>\n<li>Placebo group: 96.6 mg\/dL (plus\/minus 14.6 mg\/dL)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>Selenium supplementation and the risk of prostate cancer<\/h3>\n<p>This study showing no diabetes causing effect of selenium supplementation is an encouraging study.\u00a0 Furthermore, there seems to be <a href=\"https:\/\/drc.bmj.com\/content\/7\/1\/e000613\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">no age-related effect of selenium supplementation on insulin sensitivity<\/a> (Jacobs, figure 4).<\/p>\n<p>This is especially noteworthy because earlier studies seem to show that the best protection of selenium against the development of<a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/22648711\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"> prostate cancer <\/a>is found in the serum selenium concentration range from 120 micrograms per liter to 170 micrograms per liter [Hurst].<\/p>\n<p>The results from a 2018 meta-analysis and systematic review indicate that selenium \u201cmost probably has a protective role against the development of prostate cancer and its progression to advanced stages.\u201d Accordingly, the authors of the review conclude that \u201cselenium supplementation can be proposed for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6103565\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">prevention of prostate cancer<\/a>\u201d [Sayehmiri].<\/p>\n<h3>Sources<\/h3>\n<p>Hurst, R., Hooper, L., Norat, T., Lau, R., Aune, D., Greenwood, D.
