Senior citizens in Sweden had, on average, serum selenium concentrations of 67.1 micrograms per liter. The same increased mortality risk seen in Sweden may be typical of other selenium-poor regions of the world as well.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>There are clear differences in the metabolic profiles of elderly men who took 200 micrograms of selenium and 2 x 100 milligrams of Coenzyme Q10 daily for at least 18 months as compared with the metabolic profiles of elderly men who took matching placebos [Alehagen 2019].<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Drawing on data from a sub-analysis of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthandscience.eu\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=864:supplementation-with-q10-and-selenium-halves-your-cardiovascular-risk-for-numerous-years-us&amp;catid=20&amp;lang=us&amp;Itemid=374\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>KiSel-10 Study<\/em><\/a>, Professor Urban Alehagen reported that the major differences were seen primarily in the following biological pathways [Alehagen 2019]:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>pentose phosphate pathway<\/em> (the pathway for the generation of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide phosphate, which is a substance that reduces ubiquinone Coenzyme Q10)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><em>mevalonate pathway<\/em> (the pathway for the synthesis of cholesterol, Coenzyme Q10, and dolichol)<\/strong><\/li>\n<li><strong><em>beta-oxidation pathway<\/em> (the pathway for the breaking down of fatty acid molecules to produce energy and to produce acetyl-CoA, FADH2 and NADH, which are needed for the citric acid cycle [Krebs cycle]<\/strong><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><strong>There were other significant metabolic changes associated with the selenium and Coenzyme Q10 supplementation of senior citizens as well [Alehagen 2019].<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>Changes in Metabolic Profile After Supplementation with Selenium and Coenzyme Q10<\/h4>\n<p>In this study, Professor Alehagen and his team of researchers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2218-273X\/9\/10\/553\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><strong>analyzed the metabolic patterns of 95 metabolites in the plasma of elderly men<\/strong><\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong><em>Metabolite<\/em><\/strong> is the bio-medical term for a substance that is formed during or is necessary for the process of metabolism.<\/li>\n<li><strong><em>Metabolism<\/em><\/strong> is the term for the chemical processes inside organisms that are necessary to sustain life, e.g. the processes for converting food to energy.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The research team\u2019s analysis showed that 19 metabolites out of the 95 identified metabolites were significantly decreased in the elderly men who were treated with the combination of selenium and Coenzyme Q10 [Alehagen 2019].<\/p>\n<p>Furthermore, none of the other metabolites had levels that were significantly higher than the corresponding metabolite levels in the men who took the matching placebos, indicating that there were no harmful effects of the combined selenium and Coenzyme Q10 intervention [Alehagen 2019].<\/p>\n<h4>Significant Heart Health Outcomes from the KiSel-10 Study<\/h4>\n<p>Professor Alehagen\u2019s research group has earlier reported clinical data from the KiSel-10 Study showing that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/26105108\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><strong>senior citizens with low baseline serum selenium concentrations<\/strong><\/em><\/a> (mean: 67.1 micrograms per liter) benefited from daily supplementation with 200 micrograms of selenium and 2 x 100 milligrams of Coenzyme Q10 for four years [Alehagen, 2013; Johansson, 2015; Alehagen, 2016]:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em><strong>significantly lower risk of death from heart disease<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><strong>significantly improved heart function<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><strong>significantly reduced plasma concentrations of the heart disease bio-marker NT-proBNP<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><strong>significantly improved health-related quality of life<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<li><em><strong>observed reduction in sense of fatigue<\/strong><\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Biochemical Mechanisms Behind the KiSel-10 Heart Health Outcomes<\/h4>\n<p>In his attempts to understand the biochemical mechanisms underlying the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.healthandscience.eu\/index.php?option=com_content&amp;view=article&amp;id=864:supplementation-with-q10-and-selenium-halves-your-cardiovascular-risk-for-numerous-years-us&amp;catid=20&amp;lang=us&amp;Itemid=374\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><em>beneficial heart health outcomes in the senior citizen participants in the KiSel-10 Study<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, Professor Alehagen has previously suggested the following explanations:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>reduced levels of <strong><em>oxidative stress<\/em><\/strong> [Alehagen 2015]<\/li>\n<li>reduced levels of <strong><em>inflammation<\/em><\/strong> [Alehagen 2015]<\/li>\n<li>reduced levels of <strong><em>fibrosis<\/em><\/strong> [Alehagen 2017]<\/li>\n<li>increased levels of <strong><em>insulin-like growth factor 1<\/em><\/strong> [Alehagen 2017]<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The changes in the metabolic profiles associated with the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.q10facts.com\/index.php\/the-kisel-10-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><strong>daily supplementation with selenium and Coenzyme Q10<\/strong><\/em><\/a> may be yet another aspect of the positive health effects reported in earlier published articles [Alehagen 2019].<\/p>\n<p>A 2018 follow-up study of the surviving KiSel-10 Study participants revealed that a<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29641571\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em> persistent reduced cardiovascular mortality 12 years after the supplementation with selenium and Coenzyme Q10 for four years<\/em> <\/a><\/strong>[Alehagen 2018].<\/p>\n<h4>Importance of Selenium and Coenzyme Q10 Supplementation of Senior Citizens<\/h4>\n<p>Selenium and several of the selenium containing selenoproteins \u2013 the glutathione peroxidases, the thioredoxin reductases, and the iodothyronine deiodinases \u2013 have an important role in anti-oxidative stress defense and in immune function [Alehagen 2019].<\/p>\n<p>In selenium-poor regions of the world, e.g. Sweden, low intakes of selenium and low serum selenium status are associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease [Alehagen 2019].<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, there is <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/25511910\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><em>an important inter-relationship between selenium and Coenzyme Q10 in the body<\/em><\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 Adequate concentrations of selenium are necessary for optimal Coenzyme Q10 function [Alehagen 2015].<\/p>\n<p>Coenzyme Q10 molecules are redox molecules that play an essential role in cellular bio-energetics and in antioxidant defense of cells [Alehagen 2019].<\/p>\n<p>In an international randomized controlled multi-center study, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.q10qh.com\/promoting-results-with-coenzyme-q10-in-heart-failure\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><em>the Q-Symbio Study, daily adjunctive treatment of chronic heart failure patients with 3 x 100 milligrams of Coenzyme Q10 daily<\/em><\/strong><\/a> for two years resulted in significantly improved symptoms and survival for the patients in the CoQ10 adjunctive treatment group [Mortensen 2014].\u00a0 In a sub-analysis of the European segment of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.q10facts.com\/index.php\/coenzyme-q10-q-symbio-european-sub-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><em>Q-Symbio Study<\/em><\/strong><\/a>, researchers showed that the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.q-symbio.com\/can-i-get-the-same-q10-used-in-the-study\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><strong>CoQ10 adjunctive treatment<\/strong><\/em><\/a> was significantly associated with an improvement in the patients\u2019 ejection fraction.<\/p>\n<h4>Sources<\/h4>\n<p>Alehagen U, Johansson P, Aaseth J, Alexander J, Surowiec I, Lundstedt-Enkel K &amp;
