Researchers have compared the COVID-19 cure-rate and death-rate for infected individuals in selenium-rich and selenium-poor regions in China. They have found that regions with low selenium status have lower cure-rates and higher death-rates.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>China and Corona Virus will be forever linked in our minds.\u00a0 However, there is another important connection that we should be making: selenium status and its effect on COVID-19 virus in China.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Let me explain. Chinese and American and British researchers have published a letter in the <em>American Journal of Clinical Nutrition<\/em> in which they report <em>evidence of a significant association between regional selenium status and the reported cure-rate of COVID-19 infected patients in China<\/em> [Zhang 2020].<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>The researchers\u2019 data show <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/ajcn\/advance-article\/doi\/10.1093\/ajcn\/nqaa095\/5826147?searchresult=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em>a statistically significant association between the reported cure-rates for COVID-19 virus infections and selenium status<\/em><\/a> in China [Zhang 2020].<\/strong><\/p>\n<h4>The Selenium Status and COVID-19 Cure-Rate<\/h4>\n<p>Beginning in mid-February 2020, the researchers collected data from the Baidu website, which they describe as a non-governmental website that provides daily updates of reports from the health commission of each province in China.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_1435\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1435\" style=\"width: 227px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-1435 \" title=\"Professor Rayman suggests a plasma or serum selenium level of approximately 125 mcg\/L.\" src=\"https:\/\/seleniumfacts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Picture-MP-Rayman-199x300.png\" alt=\"Professor Margaret P Rayman\" width=\"227\" height=\"342\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seleniumfacts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Picture-MP-Rayman-199x300.png 199w, https:\/\/seleniumfacts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/10\/Picture-MP-Rayman.png 457w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 227px) 100vw, 227px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-1435\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Professor Margaret P. Rayman, University of Surrey, Guildford, UK, was one of the researchers on the Selenium and COVID-19 Cure-Rate in China Study. In Figure 2 in her 2019 article on Selenium Intake, Status, and Health, Professor Rayman suggests that a serum selenium concentration of approximately 125 micrograms per liter is optimal.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The researchers defined cure-rate and death-rate as the percentages of COVID-19 infected patients who were cured or who died.<\/p>\n<p>They used the National Health Commission of China definition for \u201ccured patients.\u201d<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>The patient\u2019s temperature has returned to normal for more than 3 days.<\/li>\n<li>The patient\u2019s respiratory symptoms are significantly improved.<\/li>\n<li>The patient\u2019s lung imaging shows significant reduction of inflammation.<\/li>\n<li>The patient\u2019s test for respiratory pathogens shows negative on 2 consecutive occasions at least 1 day apart.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The researchers analyzed the associations between regional and city cure-rates and mean regional and city hair selenium status.<\/p>\n<h4>Data from Inside Hubei Province (capital city: Wuhan)<\/h4>\n<p>The death-rate was significantly higher and the cure-rate significantly lower in Hubei Province than in all other Chinese provinces. Consequently, the researchers decided to do two separate analyses: one for inside Hubei Province and one for outside Hubei Province.<\/p>\n<p>Notably, the data for Hubei Province show that the cure-rate in Enshi City \u2013 a seven-hour drive to the west of Wuhan \u2013 was much higher than the cure-rate for other cities in Hubei Province. Enshi City is in a region that is known for its very high selenium intakes and selenium status, higher than in other parts of Hubei Province.<\/p>\n<h4>Data from Outside Hubei Province (capital city: Wuhan)<\/h4>\n<p>The researchers\u2019 analysis of the data from Heilongjiang Province in northeast China, a notoriously selenium-poor region in which Keshan County is located, showed a much higher death-rate for this low-selenium region compared to other Chinese provinces outside Hubei Province.<\/p>\n<p>The researchers also found significant associations between selenium status and cure-rate in cities outside Hubei Province.<\/p>\n<p>They did not do a correlation analysis for cities inside Hubei Province because selenium status data were available for only two cities in the province.<\/p>\n<h4>Explaining the Association between Selenium Status and Cure-Rate<\/h4>\n<p>To explain why high selenium status is associated with higher cure-rates and lower death-rates, the researchers pointed to earlier work by the Melinda Beck laboratory:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Beck showed that host selenium deficiency was associated with the increased virulence of RNA viruses such as coxsackie virus B3 and influenza virus A [Beck 2004].<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/10944489\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><em>Viral infection of a selenium-deficient host resulted in the mutation of the virus to a more virulent form than was the case in selenium-sufficient hosts<\/em><\/strong><\/a> [Beck 2004].<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The researchers also pointed to the evidence from Keshan County, the site of seasonal outbreaks of Keshan disease. Keshan disease is a selenium-deficiency disease that results in congestive cardiomyopathy (a form of heart muscle disease). Keshan disease is caused by a combination of selenium deficiency and infection by a mutated strain of the coxsackie virus.<\/p>\n<p>In 2018, Zhou et al published a meta-analysis of 41 studies including 1,983,238 subjects, 683,075 of whom were in experimental groups and 1,300,163 of whom were in control groups. The data from the studies showed that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/29627894\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><em>giving selenium supplements to the residents of the Keshan disease endemic areas significantly reduced the incidence of Keshan disease<\/em><\/strong><\/a> [Zhou 2018].<\/p>\n<h4>Possible Limitations of the Selenium Status and COVID-19 Cure-rate Study<\/h4>\n<p>The researchers admit that there may be confounding variables at work for which they did not have data in their study of the influence of selenium deficiency on COVID-19 cure-rates and death-rates in China [Zhang 2020]:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>age<\/li>\n<li>co-morbidities such as heart disease, diabetes, hypertension, chronic respiratory disease, and cancer<\/li>\n<li>variations in medical treatment facilities from region to region<\/li>\n<li>variations in therapy protocols from region to region<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Bottom line: Selenium Status and COVID-19 Cure-Rate in China<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Studies have shown that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/15337163\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><em><strong>host selenium deficiencies are associated with increased virulence of coxsackie viruses and influenza viruses<\/strong><\/em><\/a> [Beck 2004].<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC6769590\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><em>Selenium deficiency is associated with the pathogenicity of several viruses<\/em><\/strong><\/a>. Several selenoproteins, in particular the glutathione peroxidases and thioredoxin reductases, seem important in various models of viral replication [Guillin 2019].<\/li>\n<li>A new study shows that <a href=\"https:\/\/academic.oup.com\/ajcn\/advance-article\/doi\/10.1093\/ajcn\/nqaa095\/5826147?searchresult=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong><em>there is a significant association between selenium status and COVID-19 virus cure-rate in China<\/em> <\/strong><\/a>[Zhang 2020].<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Sources<\/h4>\n<p>Beck MA, Handy J, Levander OA.
