{"id":2881,"date":"2022-11-30T10:43:27","date_gmt":"2022-11-30T10:43:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/seleniumfacts.com\/?p=2881"},"modified":"2022-11-29T10:28:39","modified_gmt":"2022-11-29T10:28:39","slug":"selenium-supplementation-and-alzheimers-disease","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seleniumfacts.com\/index.php\/selenium-supplementation-and-alzheimers-disease","title":{"rendered":"Selenium Supplementation and Alzheimer\u2019s Disease"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Clinical studies show a clear correlation between Alzheimer&#8217;s Disease and low selenium status.\u00a0 Lower selenium status is associated with worse cognitive decline [Aaseth 2016]. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>In many regions of Europe and the Middle East, there is poor selenium content in the soil and, accordingly, lower intake of selenium from food sources [Stoffaneller &amp; Morse 2015; Winther 2020].<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2884\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2884\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2884 size-medium\" title=\"Selenium important for brain function\" src=\"https:\/\/seleniumfacts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Alzheimers-300x225.png\" alt=\"Woman with Alzheimer's\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seleniumfacts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Alzheimers-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/seleniumfacts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/11\/Alzheimers.png 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2884\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Adequate levels of selenium are essential for brain function; in fact, the brain is one of the organs that is supplied with selenium at the expense of other organs and tissues in times of low selenium intake. Selenoprotein P plays a special role in delivering selenium to the brain and the neurons. Some of the glutathione peroxidase and thioredoxin reductase selenoenzymes are important intracellular antioxidants in neurons and glia cells of the central nervous system.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>The daily intake of selenium from food in many European countries is<\/strong> <strong>well below the amount needed for optimal function of important selenoproteins. The needed intake of selenium from food is\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32001830\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em> estimated to be at least 105 mcg per day <\/em><\/a>[Winther 2020, fig. 2].<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Using evidence from human studies in various countries, Prof. Jan Aaseth and colleagues have documented <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27530256\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>the association between lower selenium\u00a0 status and Alzheimer\u2019s Disease and\/or cognitive impairment<\/em> <\/a>[Aaseth 2016].<\/strong><\/p>\n<h5>Chinese study<\/h5>\n<p>In a study of rural Chinese adults aged 65 years or older, <strong><em>low nail selenium concentration was significantly associated with low cognitive scores<\/em><\/strong> in<br \/>\nfour of five tests. There was a notable dose-response effect on cognitive function across the selenium quintiles in the study.<\/p>\n<h5>Dutch study<\/h5>\n<p>Patients diagnosed with mild Alzheimer\u2019s Disease had <strong><em>lower plasma selenium levels<\/em><\/strong> than healthy age-matched elderly subjects (82.2 vs. 93.2 mcg\/L).<\/p>\n<h5>French study<\/h5>\n<p>Individuals in the lowest quartile of plasma selenium concentration (less than 75.8 mcg\/L) were <strong><em>58 % more likely to be diagnosed with cognitive decline<\/em><\/strong> than were individuals with a plasma selenium concentration of 86.9 mcg\/L. Moreover, in the study, cognitive decline was significantly associated with the extent of plasma selenium decline over a nine-year period.<\/p>\n<h5>Italian study<\/h5>\n<p>Individuals with <strong><em>low plasma selenium<\/em><\/strong> concentrations (less than 66.7 mcg\/L) had significantly lower performance-based coordination scores and Mini-Mental State Examination scores compared to individuals with higher (greater than 82.3 mcg\/L) concentrations.<\/p>\n<h5>Studies in Brazil and Turkey<\/h5>\n<p>In the same way, studies done in Brazil and Turkey have shown <strong><em>an association between low selenium status and cognitive decline<\/em><\/strong> [Aaseth 2016].<\/p>\n<h4>Selenium Supplementation and Cognitive Function<\/h4>\n<p>In an evaluation of 11 studies, Pereira et al [2022] observed the following effects of selenium supplementation.<\/p>\n<h6>Selenium only studies<\/h6>\n<ul>\n<li>There was improvement in selenium status, glutathione peroxidase activity, and some cognitive test scores in patients diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment.<\/li>\n<li>There was also <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/35956381\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>improvement in selenium status and mini-mental scores in patients diagnosed with Alzheimer\u2019s Disease<\/em><\/strong><\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h6>Studies of selenium plus other nutrients<\/h6>\n<ul>\n<li>Improvement in cognitive test scores was observed in both Alzheimer\u2019s Disease patients and patients with mild cognitive impairment.<\/li>\n<li>Pereira et al concluded that<em><strong> selenium supplementation is a good adjuvant treatment for patients with Alzheimer\u2019s Disease and patients with mild cognitive impairment<\/strong><\/em> [Pereira 2022].<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h4>Optimal plasma\/serum selenium status<\/h4>\n<p>Optimal function of Selenoprotein P and glutathione peroxidase selenoproteins is necessary for protection against the sort of cognitive decline that characterizes Alzheimer\u2019s Disease [Aaseth 2016].<\/p>\n<p>At present, <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32001830\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>the best estimate for optimal plasma\/serum selenium status is approximately 125 mcg\/L<\/em><\/strong><\/a> [Winther 2020, fig. 3].<\/p>\n<h4>Combined Selenium and Coenzyme Q10 Supplementation<\/h4>\n<p>There exists a <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/25511910\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>biological interrelationship between selenium and Coenzyme Q10<\/strong><\/em><\/a> such that there is an advantage in using the two substances in combination if there are deficiencies within the population [Alehagen &amp; Aaseth 2015].<\/p>\n<h6>Swedish study<\/h6>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2852\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2852\" style=\"width: 148px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2852 size-full\" title=\"Combination selenium and Coenzyme Q10\" src=\"https:\/\/seleniumfacts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Alehagen-from-Alex.png\" alt=\"Prof Urban Alehagen\" width=\"148\" height=\"192\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2852\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Prof. Urban Alehagen was the lead researcher on the KiSel-10 Study.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In a study in which researchers administered 200 mcg selenium and 200 mg of Coenzyme Q10 daily for four years to\u00a0 elderly community living citizens, average age: 78 years,\u00a0 the researchers observed <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26482687\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>improved health-related quality of life and increased vitality<\/em><\/strong><\/a> as compared to placebo treatment [Johansson 2015].<\/p>\n<p>In the same study, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.q10facts.com\/the-kisel-10-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>the KiSel-10 study<\/strong><\/em><\/a>, treatment with selenium and Coenzyme Q10 showed <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29641571\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>decreased levels of inflammation biomarkers<\/em><\/strong><\/a>\u00a0 [Alehagen 2015 Sep] and <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/26662217\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>oxidative stress biomarkers<\/strong><\/em><\/a> [Alehagen 2015 Nov-Dec].<\/p>\n<h4>Conclusion: Selenium Supplementation and Alzheimer\u2019s Disease<\/h4>\n<p>Human studies show that selenium status is commonly low in patients diagnosed with cognitive impairment and with Alzheimer\u2019s Disease.<\/p>\n<p>The optimal function of selenium-dependent selenoproteins needs<br \/>\nhigher selenium intakes than is possible in the selenium-poor regions of much of Europe and the Middle East.<\/p>\n<p>There is, therefore, a role for selenium in the prevention and treatment of Alzheimer\u2019s Disease.<\/p>\n<p>There is also a role for selenium supplementation in the prevention of the development of Alzheimer\u2019s Disease in elderly patients diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment;<\/p>\n<h4>Sources<\/h4>\n<p>Aaseth J, Alexander J, Bj\u00f8rklund G, Hestad K, Dusek P, Roos PM, Alehagen U.
