Specifically, numerous selenoproteins, in which selenium is an essential component, have antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and immunostimulating effects [Bj\u00f8rklund 2022].<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong>Why is this important?<\/strong><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2967\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2967\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2967 size-medium\" title=\"Important to maintain selenium levels as we get older\" src=\"https:\/\/seleniumfacts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Old-people-300x204.png\" alt=\"Old people\" width=\"300\" height=\"204\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seleniumfacts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Old-people-300x204.png 300w, https:\/\/seleniumfacts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/01\/Old-people.png 640w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2967\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>Biological aging involves the gradual worsening of the composition of our cells and organelles. It involves the slowing down of our body functions. Aging is typically accompanied by wrinkled skin and thinner skin, by a loss of body mass and bone density, and by poorer eyesight. The older we get, the more vulnerable we are to loss of cognitive function and dementia, heart trouble, osteoporosis, renal failure, viral infections, etc. Eventually death comes.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><strong>The aging process is characterized by the following inevitable<\/strong> <strong>physiological developments [Alehagen 2021]:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC8533247\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>increasing imbalance between antioxidant protection and oxidative damage caused by harmful free radicals<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<li>chronic systemic inflammation<\/li>\n<li>decline in mitochondrial renewal and function<\/li>\n<li>stem cell exhaustion<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h5>Selenium and selenoproteins and antioxidant protection<\/h5>\n<p>One theory of biological aging is that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9570904\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>oxidative stress and chronic low-grade inflammation play an important role in aging-related physical and mental decline<\/em><\/strong><\/a>. Harmful reactive oxygen species \u2013 popularly known as free radicals \u2013 overwhelm the ability of the available antioxidants to neutralize them. The harmful free radicals cause oxidative damage to the cells and to the DNA, lipids, and proteins in the cells [Bj\u00f8rklund 2022].<\/p>\n<p>Acting as scavengers of harmful free radicals, antioxidants are indispensable to the prevention and treatment of age-related disorders. Through the action of its selenoproteins, <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/36235150\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>the trace element selenium possesses valuable antioxidant properties<\/strong><\/em><\/a>. In particular, the selenium-dependent glutathione peroxidases and the thioredoxin reductases directly suppress oxidative stress [Bj\u00f8rklund 2022].<\/p>\n<h5>Selenium and selenoproteins and chronic inflammation<\/h5>\n<p>Selenium plays a significant role in regulating different inflammatory processes in the body. Insufficient selenium levels in the cells are associated with manifestations of inflammation in various tissues and organs. Optimal selenium status can mitigate inflammatory processes and reduce complications [Bj\u00f8rklund 2022].<\/p>\n<h5>Selenium and selenoproteins and immune function<\/h5>\n<p>Selenium deficiency has a negative effect on the response of the innate and adaptive immune systems. In general, optimal selenium levels stimulate increasing antibody production in the immune system. Overall, selenium\u2019s impact on the immune system is achieved through the modulation of the<br \/>\nactivity of neutrophils, macrophages, natural killer cells, and T and B-lymphocytes [Bj\u00f8rklund 2022]<\/p>\n<h5>Deficient, sub-optimal, and optimal selenium concentrations<\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32001830\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Optimal plasma\/serum selenium concentrations are around 125 mcg\/L<\/em> <\/strong><\/a>[Winther 2020, Fig. 3].<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/33835398\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Sub-optimal plasma\/serum selenium concentrations are between 70 and 100 mcg\/L<\/em><\/strong><\/a> [Al-Mubarak 2021].<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31808274\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>Deficient plasma\/serum selenium concentrations are below 70 mcg\/L<\/em><\/strong><\/a> [Al-Mubarak 2021].<\/p>\n<p>The estimated range of dietary selenium consumption in European countries is between 30\u201350 mcg\/day. Typical supplemental doses are 50 and 100 mcg\/day. Note that daily selenium intakes above 400 mcg\/day over time can result in harmful effects [Bj\u00f8rklund 2022].<\/p>\n<h5>Studies of selenium and healthy aging<\/h5>\n<h6>France<\/h6>\n<p>In the 9-year longitudinal EVA study in France involving 1389 community-living participants aged 59\u201371 years, researchers investigated the relationship between plasma selenium concentrations and longevity. They observed that sub-optimal plasma selenium levels adversely affected the maintenance of optimal health in an aging population. Their comparisons of survival rates among quartiles of plasma selenium levels showed that <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/16123147\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>mortality increased in subgroups with low plasma selenium concentrations at baseline<\/em><\/strong><\/a> [Akbaraly 2005].<\/p>\n<h6>Italy<\/h6>\n<p>Studies of nonagenarians and centenarians in Italy have shown that very few long-time survivors have sub-optimal blood selenium concentrations.<br \/>\nThis is a possible explanation for the longevity seen in Italian scientists\u2019 nonagenarian\u2013centenarian studies.<\/p>\n<p>A study of individuals living in Sardinia, an Italian island with a higher prevalence of centenarians than in other European countries, showed significant depletion of selenium concentration in the plasma of<br \/>\nnonagenarians (88.9 mcg\/L) and centenarians (81.9 mcg\/L) compared to 60-year-old controls. However, it is noteworthy that the individuals surviving into their nineties and one hundreds had managed to stay well above the selenium deficiency level of &lt; 70 mcg\/L [Bj\u00f8rklund 2022].<\/p>\n<p>Sardinia is one of five blue zones in the world &#8211; regions in the world where people are known to live longer than average. The other blue zones are Okinawa, Japan; Nicoya, Costa Rica; Icaria, Greece; and Loma Linda, California, United States.<\/p>\n<p>If we accept that genetics plays a role of no more than 30% in survival to high old age, then nutrition (including selenium intake) and exercise and lifestyle (including stress) must play a role. It is well known that <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/25734564\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>selenium intakes vary considerably from region to region in the world<\/em> <\/strong><\/a>in accordance with the selenium content of the soil and the foodstuffs [Stoffaneller &amp; Morse 2015].<\/p>\n<h6>Sweden<\/h6>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2852\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2852\" style=\"width: 187px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-2852 \" title=\"Selenium and coenzyme Q10 combined for longer life\" src=\"https:\/\/seleniumfacts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/09\/Alehagen-from-Alex.png\" alt=\"Prof Urban Alehagen\" width=\"187\" height=\"243\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2852\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong> Supplementation with selenium\/coenzyme Q10 improved heart function, reduced cardiovascular mortality, and improved health-related quality of life in community living elderly citizens.<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>After 12 years (four years of daily supplementation and eight years of follow-up), researchers could see <a href=\"https:\/\/www.q10facts.com\/the-kisel-10-study\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong><em>significantly reduced cardiovascular mortality<\/em><\/strong><\/a> in the elderly community living citizens <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/29641571\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em><strong>supplemented with a combination of selenium and Coenzyme Q10<\/strong><\/em><\/a>. Selenium supplementation at a dose of 200 mcg\/day raised the serum selenium concentrations of the study participants, average age 78 years, from a baseline mean value of 67.1 mcg\/L to a mean value of 210.3 mcg\/L [Alehagen 2018; Alehagen 2020 ].<\/p>\n<h6>Spain<\/h6>\n<p>A cohort study of 227 older adults residing in 14 nursing homes in Asturias has revealed that study participants in the upper tertile of serum selenium concentration had more than twice as much probability of reporting good health status, good chewing ability, and doing more than 60 minutes of exercise per day.<\/p>\n<h5>Conclusion: Selenium and anti-aging and a long and healthy life<\/h5>\n<p>Deficient (&lt; 70 mcg\/L) and sub-optimal (70-100 mcg\/L) selenium<br \/>\nstatus may accelerate the aging process, increase vulnerability<br \/>\nto various disorders, and reduce life expectancy [Bj\u00f8rklund 2022].<\/p>\n<p>One estimate is that selenium deficiency affects one billion people world-wide and has adverse health effects [Bj\u00f8rklund 2022].<\/p>\n<p>Damage to cells, lipids, proteins, and DNA caused by an imbalance between protective antioxidants and harmful reactive oxygen species are a characteristic of aging. Selenium in the form of selenoproteins has a critical role in anti-aging processes [Bj\u00f8rklund 2022].<\/p>\n<p>Selenium deficiency is a factor in some disorders caused by pathogenic bacteria and viruses. Selenium supplementation can stimulate<br \/>\nthe immune system against infectious diseases [Bj\u00f8rklund 2022].<\/p>\n<p>Health effects of selenium are dose-dependent. The margin between essential selenium intakes and intakes associated with toxicity is narrow.
