Some news reports have suggested that high selenium intakes and status may be potential risk factors for the development of type 2 Diabetes mellitus. However, current data show that supplemental selenium does not cause diabetes [Schomburg 2020].<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><figure id=\"attachment_3123\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3123\" style=\"width: 293px\" class=\"wp-caption alignright\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-3123 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/seleniumfacts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Diabetes-symptoms-293x300.png\" alt=\"Diabetes symptoms\" width=\"293\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/seleniumfacts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Diabetes-symptoms-293x300.png 293w, https:\/\/seleniumfacts.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/Diabetes-symptoms.png 626w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 293px) 100vw, 293px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3123\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><strong>It seems likely that diabetes causes elevated blood selenium levels rather than the other way around [Schomburg 2020].<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>Two large randomized controlled trials using selenium supplements have shown no diabetes risk caused by 1) <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/19066370\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a selenomethionine product<\/a> [Lippman 2009] and 2)\u00a0\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/27530657\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> a selenium-enriched yeast product<\/a> [Thompson 2016; Jacobs 2019]. In neither study was there any significant risk of diabetes\u00a0 at the recommended dosage, not even among selenium-replete individuals of various ages and both genders [Schomburg 2020].<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, in the Selenium Trial, the researchers saw no causal role for selenium in the development of insulin resistance or diabetes. Instead, they observed <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30899530\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">decreased fasting blood glucose levels in the selenium supplemented group<\/a> compared to the control group [Jacobs 2019].<\/p>\n<h5>Best Explanation for UNCLEAR Selenium and Diabetes Link<\/h5>\n<p>Professor Lutz Schomburg, Charit\u00e9 Hospital, Berlin, has explained that it is likely that high serum selenium levels do not cause type 2 diabetes but, rather, that type 2 <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31823341\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">diabetes causes high serum selenium concentrations<\/a> [Schomburg 2020].<\/p>\n<p>How does this work?<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Under normal conditions, the availability of insulin decreases selenoprotein P biosynthesis and secretion in the liver.<\/li>\n<li>In conditions of insulin resistance, this inhibition of selenoprotein P biosynthesis declines.<\/li>\n<li>Consequently, selenoprotein P levels increase as do selenium concentrations in the blood circulation.<\/li>\n<li>Thus, high serum selenium does not increase diabetes risk. Diabetes causes increasing selenoprotein P and circulating selenium levels.<\/li>\n<li>Then, in the later stages of type 2 diabetes with decreasing insulin levels caused by the decline in beta-cell function, the high glucose concentrations continue to promote selenoprotein P biosynthesis and secretion unless the selenoprotein P biosynthesis is counteracted by medication, e.g., metformin.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h5>Clinical Studies of Selenium and Diabetes<\/h5>\n<p>Prof. Schomburg notes that the type 2 diabetes disease is quite complex. At least five different subgroups of type 2 diabetes patients can be distinguished.<br \/>\nThat means that serious clinical studies comparing diabetic patients with non-diabetic controls need to have at least 100 subjects per diabetes sub-group included if the outcomes are to be reliable [Schomburg 2020].<\/p>\n<p>As we do not have such highly powered clinical trials, the relationship between high dietary selenium intakes and blood selenium concentrations and the risk of type 2 diabetes remains<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mdpi.com\/2218-1989\/13\/6\/767\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> unclear and controversial<\/a> [Alharithy &amp; Alafif 2023].<\/p>\n<h5>Conclusion: Selenium and Diabetes<\/h5>\n<p>A 2018 systematic review and meta-analysis of relevant studies has shown that the results for the relationship between selenium and type 2 diabetes differ between observational studies and randomized clinical trials. Observational studies seem to show a correlation between blood selenium levels and the risk of type 2 diabetes. The randomized controlled trial results do not show any significant relationship between the two variables [Kohler 2018].<\/p>\n<p>It could be that these differences are the result of <a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/30563119\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">uncontrolled confounding variables<\/a> in the observational studies [Kohler 2018].<\/p>\n<p>It could be that the relationship between diabetes and blood selenium concentrations can be explained by the effect of diabetes on the liver biosynthesis of selenoprotein P [Schomburg 2020].<\/p>\n<h5>Sources<\/h5>\n<p>Alharithy M &amp; Alafif N.
